The state of Florida is known all over the world as the home of Walt Disney World and here stateside we like to call it “The Sunshine State.” With its miles of coastline, beautiful beaches, the everglades and happening hot spots it is no wonder Florida natives are so proud of their home state.

Florida is nothing if not real, down to earth, and honest to goodness great place to live. So without further ado, here are the top 20 small cities in Florida:

20. Dunedin

This little gem is actually a neighbor of Tampa and is nestled in a quiet cove of St. Joseph sound. According to the city’s website, the city is popular with the international crowd, which is appropriate for a town named after Edinburg, Scotland. Always busy with a variety of activities, the town actually hosts more than 25 festivals and events every year.

Aside from its several beautiful beaches, Dunedin is home to Caladesi Island State Park. Accessible only by boat, Caladesi is, according to Visit Florida, one of the last undeveloped barrier islands. The beaches in this park are often listed in travel guides as some of the best in the entire world.

Honeymoon Island is a part of this park and provides a number of popular activities, including concessions for fishing, boating, and snorkeling. The 20-minute boat ride from Honeymoon Island takes you to what Dr. Beach calls the best beach in America. It boasts of many quiet paths among pristine dunes and palm trees. You’ll find sand dollars and other shells along the beaches, as well as a number of concession stands.

One of the major attractions for many is the quaint downtown, full of unique boutiques and unusual shopping opportunities. The town’s website boasts that there are virtually no franchise stores or representatives of national chains in the town, as well as no commercial signage.

Speaking to the city’s welcoming spirit and ambience, Walking Magazine considers Dunedin the “Best Little Walking Town in America.” Walkers are seen all hours of the day throughout the community.

As the spring training home for the Toronto Blue Jays, the city stadium also hosts events with major league teams all year long. The Florida favorites of beaches and sun are enjoyed by residents while they work hard to maintain a true Main Street America environment.
